We would like to share with you good news about the formation of a charitable organization, Buddhist Global Relief (www.buddhistglobalrelief.org).
In 2007, the Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi, a highly respected Buddhist monk best known for his translations of Buddhist scriptures into English and internationally esteemed for his deep knowledge and understanding of Buddhism, published an influential article called “A Challenge to Buddhists” (see attachment). He wrote,
The special challenge facing Buddhism in our age is to stand up as an advocate for justice in the world, a voice of conscience for those victims of social, economic and political injustice who cannot stand up for themselves…This is, in my view, a deeply moral challenge…I believe it also points in a direction that Buddhism should take if it is to share in the Buddha’s ongoing mission to humanity.
Ven. Bodhi went on to answer his own call to action. He created a vision for a new organization, grounded in the core Buddhist value of compassion, that would respond to the immensity of human suffering around the world in tangible and practical ways. The mission of this new organization, Buddhist Global Relief (BGR), is to provide relief to the poor and needy throughout the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Bearing in mind the Buddha’s statements that “hunger is the worst kind of illness” and “the gift of food is the gift of life,” BGR is initially focusing its efforts on providing food aid to those afflicted by hunger and lack of food security. Its long-range goal, however, is to combat all the manifestations of poverty that detract from the inherent dignity of human life.
BGR has just announced funding of four pilot hunger relief programs in Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. We invite and encourage you to visit the BGR web site to read more update news and programs and to consider ways in which you might become part of this effort—as a volunteer, as a donor, as a friend. And please share the wonderful news of this worthy project with anyone you think may be interested.
